Lacee Pedro
5.0 out of 5 stars –  Great Read
September 2, 2021
This book is engaging and fast paced. I was very well written and I enjoyed the whole book!

Along the border town of Patagonia, Arizona sightings of ghosts seeking revenge are terrifying some of the town folk. As a result, the lives of three people who come together are changed in inexplicable ways.

Marikler races to save her young son from the greed and deception of her husband, carrying the blessings and absolutions of her parish priest.

Ron Yawkey accepts a clandestine job to search for and locate skeletons in the desert and is hired by a local paleontologist; a man who previously discovered an unknown fossilized species in Mexico. A fact that must remain a secret.

James Carter is a man on the run after embezzling from a gay S&M porn production company. After arriving in Patagonia, he integrates himself within the civilian militia group that patrols the border, having declared war on any and all illegals.

Three unconnected people brought together by circumstances must face the judgments of… Black Market Bones.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 5 out of 5.

EXCELLENT – It’s a very nice detective story that kept me in suspense until the case was resolved. It presents the characters very vividly and the plot unfolds in such a way that it does not let you stop reading the book. I recommend it to all lovers of this kind of novels.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 5 out of 5.

GREAT MUSIC STORY – The story of Bobby who has made some bad choices in life. I thought this was going to the run of the mill sex, drugs and rock-and-roll story but this story goes deeper. Don’t expect a high octane page turner here, but the pace is constant. This is more of a piece of literary fiction than genre fiction, but anyone can get something from this story. I read the book in two sessions (one on the beach with my eReader) and found it very enjoyable. The only criticism I have is that the author tends to tell rather than show. Some scenes are writing in a matter-of-fact way. Like so and so went to college, etc. The story is strong, so it isn’t that much of a problem. If you ignore those parts, it is a very good story.

LOVED THIS BOOK! – Wow, what a great book! I’m picky when it comes to books like this, but it was excellent! The conversations were real, something I rarely see in the books I’ve read lately. They were believable and realistic. It made me feel something, like intense, another quality that is lacking in most the books I read. You need to put your paragraphs together with indentations. Very descriptive and interesting book, great job Jerry!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 5 out of 5.

EXCITING, ENTERTAINING AND ENJOYABLE – The Swamps of Jersey is a classic crime novel. It is exciting and unpredictable as well as extremely well written, high class and catchy. I liked the plot and the author’s detailed descriptions of locations and characters. It helped me picture the scenes. I highly recommend it.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 5 out of 5.

CONTEMPORARY NOIR – I’m a big fan of noir and pulp stories, and Ron Shannon’s “Gabriel’s Wing” highlights a lot of what is good in that kind of fiction: a kind of dark mystery with engaging characters and a strong narrative voice. I enjoyed this a lot.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 5 out of 5.

LOVE THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT – Why? Because the character development in this book was amazing, I loved the main characters. not only that but the writing was amazing. i have never been to many of the places listed in the book but the way Ron was explaining it, painted a clear picture in my mind.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 5 out of 5.

THE LAST HOLIDAY – When reading this book I thought of the movie the last holiday, however this storyline brings an even greater twist, the character takes the lemons and turns them into lemonade.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 4 out of 5.

A GREAT RETROSPECTION OF RETURNING TO VIETNAM FORTY YEARS AFTER – I highly recommend Marc Cullison’s “Vietnam Again.” It was a great read. It’s the story of a group of Vietnam Veterans who return to Vietnam for a two-week rediscovery trip. Their expectations were mixed about returning to such a dark foreboding time in their lives. It proved to be much more than a trip to a place they once knew, Cullison’s recollections and conclusions are thoughtful, compelling, and an example of a group of men coming to terms with their time as soldiers in this tiny sliver of a country that had such a profound impression on their lives. As I said before, “Vietnam Again,” was a great read!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 5 out of 5.

killer story – Frank Nagler has his hands full with a serial killer on the loose, departmental infighting and political intrigue. Throw in personal drama and the rookie detective’s plate is pretty full. Only dogged determination and a hunger for mystery solving keeps his head above water. “The Red Hand” is well written and easy to read. The mystery keeps the pages turning. Glad I started with Book 4. Now I can move on to Book 1.

⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 3 out of 5.

GOOD READ – Faith lost is an interesting tale, though hard to peg down in order to describe. I enjoy tales that raise questions of the soul’s journey and its interconnection with the longing question about the meaning of life. I can recommend it as a good read.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 4 out of 5.

GREAT READ BUT… – It ended off on a cliff hanger., which is fine. Readers are left to imagine the overall outcome. However, some may not be too fond of this. Other than that, it was a great read!

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 4 out of 5.

PERSONAL & INTRIGUING – I didn’t know much about the Vietnam war, other than what we read in school. This book gives a personal insight into what the author went through, and though, I’m sure each soldier’s experience was different, they were all practically “in the same boat”. What the author said from the very beginning was “This story is not the whole truth because truth can’t be told in a story. Only experience can. I have to convey my experiences in Vietnam the way I lived them. That’s why I’m telling you the story in my own way.” There are some critical reviews about this book about the author being “negative towards his experience in Vietnam”. Well, frankly, I think they’re stupid because most of them were not there, and obviously they can’t appreciate a veteran’s story about his experience. A little off-topic, but had to get that out. Thank you, Marc, for your service! Overall, would definitely recommend this book!

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 4 out of 5.

ENGAGING – Very engaging mystery.
Highly recommended!

 INTRIGUING PREMISE – 4 STARS

I like that it was opened up to a universal idea, allowing the reader to question the meaning of life and souls intertwined. Descriptive writing and colourful characters make this a good read.

SUCH A THRILLING ADVENTURE SERIES – 5 STARS

Wow I am super impressed with the author’s ability to tell a fantastic story. She had me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. Make sure you read the first book in the series otherwise you’ll be lost. This book is filled with adventure and will leave you wanting more 🙂 Do not hesitate to buy this series.

LOVED IT! – 5 STARS!

I’m a sucker for a good love story, but I tend to avoid the tear jerkers. You know from the description this one won’t have a happily ever after, but I’m so glad I took a chance on it. Loved the characters, loved the setting, and it’s such a sweet, heartfelt story. A very enjoyable read.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED – 5 STARS!

In this excellent novella, the author hooks you right away with a crime and some excellent writing. I love Michael’s use of metaphors and the way he sticks close to his lead character – you can see things happening through Nagler’s eyes. There are a few instances where the author tells us what the character is feeling instead of taking the time to lead us there through descriptions, imagery, actions and/or thought, but I’ve noticed the best authors do this at times, and it takes little away from the quality of writing overall. A very enjoyable read.

WORTH A READ – 4 STARS

I recently watched The Man in the High Castle, so when this book popped up for .99cents I gave it a try. Enjoyable and thought provoking. The Hedgerows of June iS a good read, only beef is its too short!

 MARVELOUS BOOK – 5 STARS

The author and I share two things in common related to my father. Both are from Oklahoma and both served in Vietnam. Your book has confirmed all the stories from his service there. If I did not know better, I would swear you would be twins. He vowed he would never go back to Vietnam, and he never did. I commend your willingness to go back and try to comprehend what it was all about. Follow Marc on his venture back to the place he so longed to forget. This book is a worthy read for anyone trying to make sense of a life event. It takes courage to re-examined these events, and you tell your story so well. Grab the audiobook as well Marc narrates superbly.

Have You Seen This 5 Star Review for The Frank Nagler Mysteries?

ATMOSPHERIC, UNCONVENTIONAL, COMPELLING POST-INDUSTRIAL MYSTERY ANTHOLOGY – 5 STARS!!

The award-winning Frank Nagler Mysteries, books 1-3 are compiled in ‘The Frank Nagler Mysteries’. This anthology contains: ‘The Swamps of Jersey’, ‘A Game Called Dead’, and ‘The Weight of Living.’

Read the first three books in this series back-to-back. This hardback compilation is the perfect gift for the mystery lover in your life!

This anthology of the Frank Nagler Mysteries contains the first three books in the series: Swamps of New Jersey, A Game Called Dead, and The Weight of Living, as well as a bonus short story. Set in the fictional post-industrial city of Ironton, New Jersey, each novel has a different theme, giving each a distinctive feel and a new experience for the reader. Swamps of New Jersey’s theme, to me, was about decay; the corruption and decay and breaking down of post-industrial America, where the stable, blue-class way of life most people enjoyed has gone and isn’t coming back. It’s also about what lies beneath, be it beneath the murky waters of a swamp, or behind a friendly face or respectable facade. A Game Called Dead is, on the other hand, a cat and mouse game between a ruthless, ambitious murderer and the symbolic champion of law and order. The who is almost immediately apparent, but the tension is built over what they’ll do next, and how the protagonist will prevail. The Weight of Living concerns the cycle of abuse and how people live with their traumas, alone and together.

Michael Stephen Daigle’s writing style is dynamic and vivid, with long atmospheric streams of description that let you taste the grit of Ironton’s streets in your mouth. He accurately captures the simultaneous despair and defiance common to post-industrial towns, colored by Nagler’s perspective. Nagler is not a hard-boiled detective relying on his fists and his pistol. Instead, he’s a perceptive, thoughtful protagonist, whose melancholy threatens to, but never succeeds in, dampening his sense of right and wrong. His words may be cynical, but his actions belie his inner hope that no matter how bad things look, they can get better. Wounds can be healed. Wrongs can be righted. It’s this inner conflict that makes Frank Nagler a compelling protagonist.

In the interest of transparency, I should mention that I am a member of a writing group that Michael Daigle is part of, but these books were already published well before I had joined. I purchased this anthology (and the fourth novel, The Red Hand) on my own and have received no compensation of any kind for this review.

Pick up your copy of ‘The Frank Nagler Mysteries’ today!

Available in paperback, hardback and ebook formats! Then, check out ‘The Red Hand’, the prequel to this award-winning series and get to know Frank as a young detective, Martha when she was more than a memory and Charlie as he terrorizes a still thriving Ironton, NJ.
